Mercedes-AMG unveils electric GT SUV with 860kW

Words: Andrew Sluys

Mercedes-AMG has revealed its GT SUV, which arrives as a high-riding version of its polarising GT 4-Door Coupe.

I say polarising as the styling of the GT 4-Door wasn’t too everyone’s taste, but it seems to suit the high-riding nature of the SUV better.

Riding on the same 800-volt AMG.EA platform as the sedan, this GT SUV uses two electric motors.

It is offered in GT 53, GT 55, and GT 63 trims, but just the latter receives the ridiculous outputs of 860kW and 200Nm.

This allows it to hit 100km/h from a standing start in 2.4-seconds, or 0-200km/h in just 6.8-seconds. Top speed is limited to 270km/h.

It’s worth noting that Mercedes-AMG is using a one-foot rollout to collect these times, in the same fashion as Tesla.

With two motors, the GT SUV is all-wheel drive as standard, and uses a two-speed transmission to optimise performance.

The GT 63 features a 128kWh battery, which provides an electric driving range of up to 700km.

As for charging, it is rated up to 710kW when using a DC fast charger, which will charge from 10 to 80 per cent in 12 minutes.

The range-topping GT 63 gets carbon ceramic brakes as standard, hinting at serious track performance for the electric SUV.

Mercedes has utilised V8 sounds taken from the C 190 AMG GT-R to produce a soundtrack inside the SUV.

This is part of the AMGFORCE Sport+ system, which uses the sound system in conjunction with simulated gear shifts and seat vibrations to simulate the experience of an ICE-powered car.

On the inside, this SUV follows in the footsteps of the sedan with a 10.2inch digital cluster and a 14-inch infotainment display. An optional 14-inch passenger display is also available.

While New Zealand pricing and availability is yet to be confirmed, production is set to kick off this year, so we should see it in 2027 as some point.
