Mercedes-Benz has taken the covers off its most luxurious Unimog to date, which has been built to celebrate eight decades of the off-road icon.
Built in partnership with Hellgeth Engineering, this one-off ‘mog is a proof-of-concept that the rugged truck can also be a bit fancy.

Starting at the bottom, it is based on a standard U 4023 with portal axles, three locking differentials, and its sturdy chassis.
Where the usual ‘mog gets a turbo diesel four-cylinder engine, this one has been swapped out for a six-cylinder OM 936, that measures 7.7-litres in capacity.

This new turbo diesel engine pumps out 220kW, and at least 1000Nm of torque in standard configuration.
Said to be inspired by an SUV (our guess is G wagon), the exterior wears steel panels that do a good job of modernising the overall aesthetic.

Pair this with the massive 20-inch bead-lock wheels wrapped in all-terrain rubber, and you have something looking like it’s ready for the apocalypse.
On the inside, there are four leather-clad seats, contrast stitching, and Mercedes’ signature ambient lighting.
Considering how this truck is tipped to be the pinnacle of off-road luxury, it’s strange that only a single interior shot was provided.

According to Mercedes, though there aren’t any plans to put this luxury Unimog into production at this stage, if there is customer interest, it could be pushed through.
Given how well the G Wagon sells around the world, it wouldn’t take much to convince high-class folk on a luxury Unimog, but then again, they’re going to need a far bigger garage.
