Watch the Toyota GR Yaris ad that was banned in Australia

Words: Andrew Sluys

Australia’s advertising regulators have decided another Toyota ad was too raucous to be shown on TV.

The ad in question centres around the GR Yaris, and shows it doing what it does best — imitating a rally car.

Unfortunately, the stunts, which included a large jump, and a bunch of slides, proved to be too red hot.

A complaint was issued to the regulators, and it was found to have breached the Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) code.

In response to the ruling, Toyota Australia argued the driver was visibly dressed in race attire, giving the impression they were a professional rally driver.

Despite being set in an area with a large motocross-style jump, it was noted in the ruling that if the driving stunts were completed on any public road, they’d be in breach of law.

The ad was subsequently pulled from broadcast, but still exists on Toyota Australia’s YouTube channel.

Speaking with Australian outlet Drive, Toyota Australia issued the following statement:

“Toyota Australia acknowledges the decision made by Ad Standards. The current GR Yaris advertisement has been discontinued while we make the necessary adjustments.”
