German performance specialist HWA has unveiled an even more hardcore version of its retro-inspired Evo project, introducing the new Evo R, a limited-production, track-only machine.

Limited to 15 examples worldwide, the HWA Evo R takes inspiration directly from the company’s Nürburgring 24 Hours challenger, blending classic Mercedes-Benz 190E styling with modern motorsport engineering and serious performance.

While the standard HWA Evo is already an extreme reinterpretation of the 190E Evolution models, the Evo R pushes things further, sharing much of its core structure and technology with HWA’s dedicated competition car.

The track-focused machine features the same reinforced monocoque, FIA-specification roll cage and motorsport fuel cell used in the race version. Its aerodynamic package also mirrors the Nürburgring racer, complete with widened bodywork, large vents and a heavily revised bonnet design.

What the regular Evo looks like

Under said bonnet sits a Mercedes-sourced twin-turbocharged V6 engine producing approximately 420kW and 670Nm. Drive is sent through a six-speed sequential gearbox, said to deliver the sort of rapid-fire shifts expected from a modern GT race car.

HWA has also equipped the Evo R with six-way adjustable suspension developed alongside KW and H&R, allowing owners to fine-tune the car for different circuits and driving styles. Massive AP Racing competition brakes handle stopping duties, while lightweight Ronal wheels and polycarbonate windows help keep weight under control. In keeping with its motorsport DNA, the Evo R even comes fitted with pneumatic air jacks.

Despite its extreme specification, HWA says the Evo R has been engineered to remain approachable for drivers of varying skill levels. The company claims ease of use was a major focus during development, helping owners enjoy the car on track without the intimidating nature of a full professional race car.

To support buyers, HWA will also provide dedicated track-day support, technical assistance and spare parts access for all 15 customers. Buyers can further customise their cars with optional equipment including endurance racing upgrades, air conditioning, a passenger seat and additional electronic systems.

Pricing has yet to be confirmed, but given the standard HWA Evo already commands a substantial premium, the Evo R is expected to comfortably exceed the NZ$1.8 million mark before options.
