Watch: Auckland driver facing charges after reversing on Northwestern Motorway

Words: Andrew Sluys

A driver is facing charges after being caught reversing down Auckland’s Northwestern Motorway.

The 48-year-old driver of the BMW was filmed from another car as it reversed at speed, changing lanes, and cutting off other drivers.

The driver was reportedly suffering from mechanical issues, and told police he was heading to the nearest petrol station.

When asked about why he didn’t get the car towed, Motorways Sergeant Rowan McCarthy said “he said his friend who had a tow truck was unavailable.”

Following this clip, the car reportedly made it halfway up the Lincoln Road off-ramp, where it stopped.

“It’s really lucky that nobody crashed or was killed as a result of this; it was such a dangerous decision and put a lot of people at risk,” McCarthy added.

“If you ever have mechanical issues, the only thing you should do is pull to the side of the motorway, call for help, and wait in your car for that help to arrive.”
