Plug-in hybrid JAC T9 ute ute nears New Zealand launch

Words: Andrew Sluys

New Zealand’s ute market is set to gain another hybrid offering in 2026, with the JAC T9 PHEV nearing a local launch date.

The brand’s local website reveals plans for a New Zealand-based testing program ahead of going on sale here.

“The T9 is coming soon in a PHEV option… But before we commit to this we’ll be sure to put it through its paces and test it for Kiwis, by Kiwis.”

“Our Kiwi team will put it through its paces both on and off roads up and down the country with the help of tradies, farmers, ute pros and more.”

Despite these plans JAC notes that it doesn’t “currently have a confirmed arrival date for the PHEV.”

New Zealand pricing and specifications for the T9 PHEV are also yet to be revealed, but its likely that we’ll follow in the footsteps of the Australian spec.

Over the ditch, the Hunter (as it’s called there) PHEV is powered by a turbocharged 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine that’s paired with two electric motors.

It features a 32kWh LFP battery, which should provide around 100km of electric range, according to NEDC testing.

Total system outputs reportedly sit around 385kW and 1000Nm, which should provide impressive performance for the ute.

As for a combined fuel economy figure, it has been reported at 1.6L/100km, which betters the BYD Shark 6’s 2.0L/100km.

Australian media is reporting the Hunter PHEV will be launching in the next few months, which means the T9 PHEV shouldn’t be too far behind.
