BYD has revealed a new version of its mid-size plug-in hybrid SUV, with the latest Sealion 05 DM-i bringing major gains in electric driving range, technology and design.
Unveiled in China, the latest model represents a significant overhaul of the current Sealion 5, which has just gone on sale here. While local availability for the updated version has yet to be confirmed, the changes suggest a substantial step forward for the model.

Visually, the Sealion 05 DM-i adopts styling cues from its all-electric sibling, featuring a cleaner, closed-off front end in place of the outgoing model’s large grille. Flush door handles, simplified body lines and revised LED lighting signatures give the SUV a more modern look, while new wheel designs and colours further freshen its appearance.
Despite being 118mm shorter overall, the new model rides on a longer wheelbase, improving cabin space and practicality. Boot capacity has also grown significantly to 650 litres.

Inside, the cabin has been reworked with a more contemporary layout. A column-mounted gear selector frees up space in the centre console, allowing for features such as dual wireless phone chargers and additional storage. A larger 12.8-inch touchscreen is now standard, with higher-spec models gaining a 15.6-inch display, alongside a digital instrument cluster.
The biggest change comes under the skin, where the Sealion 05 DM-i gains substantially larger battery options. A new 26.6kWh pack delivers up to 220km of electric range (NEDC), roughly triple that of the outgoing model, while a larger 34.3kWh battery increases this to a claimed 305km. Charging speeds have also improved, with both AC and DC capabilities enhanced.

Powertrain updates include a revised 1.5-litre petrol engine and a 120kW electric motor, contributing to a claimed fuel consumption of just 3.1L/100km and a combined driving range exceeding 2000km.
Higher-spec models also introduce advanced driver assistance features, including LiDAR-based systems and enhanced semi-autonomous driving capability.
