Hyundai Ioniq range grows with new 3

Words: Kyle Cassidy

Hyundai has unveiled the all-new Ioniq 3, a compact electric hatchback designed to make EV ownership more accessible and practical for everyday drivers.

Developed primarily for the European market, the Ioniq 3 introduces a fresh design approach described as an “Aero Hatch”, blending aerodynamic efficiency (Drag Coefficient claimed at 0.263) with a focus on interior space. Its sleek front end flows into a distinctive roofline that maximises headroom for both front and rear passengers, while maintaining a streamlined silhouette aimed at improving efficiency.

Built on Hyundai Motor Group’s Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP), the Ioniq 3 uses a 400-volt electrical architecture and will be offered with two battery options. The standard range model is expected to deliver up to 344km (WLTP), while a long-range version targets up to 496km, putting it at the sharp end of the segment. Fast-charging capability allows a 10 to 80 percent recharge in around 29 minutes under ideal conditions. The front driver uses a 100kW/250Nm motor.

Inside, Hyundai has focused on creating a spacious and flexible cabin despite the car’s compact footprint. A flat floor and long wheelbase enable generous legroom, while a “Furnished Space” design philosophy aims to make the interior feel more like a living space than a traditional cockpit. Boot capacity is rated at 441 litres, supported by additional underfloor storage.

Technology is centred around Hyundai’s new Pleos Connect infotainment system, based on Android Automotive OS, with large digital displays and intuitive controls. Features such as Digital Key 2, vehicle-to-load capability and an integrated EV route planner are designed to simplify daily use.

Safety is also a priority, with Hyundai’s SmartSense suite including Highway Driving Assist 2, blind-spot monitoring and remote parking functions.

Produced in Türkiye, the Ioniq 3 forms part of Hyundai’s broader push to expand its electric line-up, offering a practical, tech-focused option for urban and family buyers.

According to Hyundai NZ: “IONIQ 3 is still to be confirmed for local release but we are very excited by its potential for the New Zealand market”.
