New EV for MG will rival ID.4 

MG is working on a new electric SUV that will sit above the MGS5 and compete with the likes of Enyaq, ID.4 and Ariya.

Having axed the MG5 estate and introduced MGS5, the company is now going after medium electric SUVs. 

David Allison, MG UK’s Head of Product and Planning, said the firm needs to enter new segments to grow. And one of these is the family sized C-segment electric SUV.

The newcomer will likely employ the existing Modular Scalable Platform (MSP) that underpins the MG4 and S5 EV. The 800V architecture is reserved for more premium IM models. 

MSP can support wheelbases of up to 3100mm. That of the S5 is 2730mm so a bigger SUV on this platform is certainly possible. Expect use of a bigger battery too, perhaps the 77kWh unit found in the MG4 Extended Range. That would give it up to 550km of range, which would be needed to compete with the likes of Enyaq. It should accept charging power of up to 150kW too.

As to design, MG is thinking enlarged S5, and that would also differentiate it from the up-spec IM models. 

Murky SAIC patent designs suggest a thin upper headlight and another light cluster below. A full-width light bar at the rear will be similar to that of the S5. MG also filed for the MGS6 name, an obvious choice for a model that sits above the S5 EV. 

MG’s alternative to the ID.4 will likely hit the market in 2027.

And on the topic of forthcoming electric SUVs, Hyundai will reveal its small Ioniq 2 which will rival Kia’s upcoming EV2. It will slot in above Inster and below Kona Electric and will also rival Renault 4 and Volvo EX30. Expect a reveal at the Munich motor show in September, before an on-sale date midway through next year.

This will be another Hyundai EV model that uses the scalable E-GMP platform. It will likely share battery packs with Kia EV3 (58 and 81kWh) for ranges of 430 and 600km, respectively. Figure on the same 150kW and 284Nm motor driving the front wheels as the EV3 uses.

The interior will feature a widescreen set-up and new infotainment system that changes ambient lighting according to driving mode. Pricing should be similar to EV2, meaning it will start with a four if it makes it here.
