MG 07 wagon spotted with plug-in hybrid and electric options expected
Words: Kyle Cassidy
MG looks set to add a wagon to its new 07 range, with a camouflaged prototype spotted testing on Chinese roads.
The newcomer is expected to share the recently launched sedan’s plug-in hybrid and electric powertrains, while offering a more practical load area. Wagon specifications and launch timing remain unconfirmed, and there’s no word on New Zealand availability.

The latest sighting follows design images published by China’s National Intellectual Property Administration in July. According to CarNewsChina, a launch announcement could be close.

MG’s 07 sedan has already attracted strong interest in its home market, recording more than 42,000 locked orders within 20 days of launch.
More room out back
Up front, the wagon appears to retain the sedan’s C-shaped, two-tier headlights, along with its windscreen and A-pillars.
The bigger changes are behind the rear doors, where an extended roofline creates space over the luggage compartment. Earlier spy shots showed a rear spoiler, rear wiper and full-width tail-light bar, with vent-like details at either end.

Prototypes have appeared on both the sedan’s two-tone seven-spoke wheels and an alternative black five-petal design.

A roof-mounted lidar sensor also features on the latest test car, suggesting it could adopt the sedan’s Momenta R7 driver assistance system. In suitably equipped sedans, that includes navigation-based driving assistance and automated parking.
Three powertrains likely
MG hasn’t confirmed what will power the wagon, but the sedan provides a guide to the likely options.
Its entry-level plug-in hybrid combines an 82kW 1.5-litre petrol engine with a 152kW front motor and a 30kWh CATL lithium iron phosphate battery. The sedan’s quoted electric-only range is 198km on the WLTP cycle.
There are also two fully electric versions. The 400-volt model uses a 176kW motor and a 67kWh semi-solid-state battery supplied by Qingtao, with a quoted WLTP range of 494km.
The higher-spec 800-volt version pairs a 235kW motor with a 91kWh CATL nickel manganese cobalt battery, lifting quoted WLTP range to 684km.
Those figures apply to the sedan; the wagon’s range and performance have yet to be announced. All sedan variants are front-wheel drive, and it’s unclear whether the wagon will introduce an all-wheel-drive option.
For an indication of size, the sedan measures 4886mm long and 1900mm wide, with a 2825mm wheelbase. It uses MacPherson strut front suspension and a multi-link rear arrangement with adjustable damping.
Chinese sedan pricing runs from 108,900 to 159,900 yuan. Where the wagon will sit in that range, and whether it will be offered beyond China, remains to be confirmed.
