More spec details emerge for the electric MGU9 ute

Words: Kyle Cassidy

MG has released more spec details about its upcoming electric ute, the MGU9 EV. It will offer 325kW of power, a 430km WLTP range and the ability to tow 3.5 tonnes.

MG Motor New Zealand has previously confirmed the battery-powered MGU9 will reach this market this year, although local pricing and grades remain under wraps.

Australia will become the first country to launch the new model globally. MG says it has been designed as’ a lifestyle ute’, and that it “combines everyday practicality with the capability for weekends away, from carrying bikes and camping gear to towing a caravan, boat or trailer.”

Power comes from two electric motors producing a combined 325kW and 700Nm. The dual-motor configuration provides all-wheel drive and is claimed to propel the MGU9 from 0–100km/h in 5.8 seconds.

Energy is stored in a 102.2kWh lithium iron phosphate battery, delivering up to 430km of range under the WLTP test cycle.

Its 3500kg braked towing capacity matches the benchmark set by many diesel-powered one-tonne utes. The unbraked limit is 750kg, while payload is rated at 685kg.

That payload figure reinforces MG’s description of the MGU9 EV as a lifestyle ute. It should comfortably handle bikes, camping gear and general family loads.

The MGU9 EV uses four-wheel electronic air suspension, rather than the leaf-spring rear arrangement fitted to many traditional utes. The system should help improve unladen ride comfort while automatically managing the vehicle’s height and attitude under different loads.

Charging is less spectacular than the performance. The ute supports 11kW AC charging and a maximum DC rate of 115kW. MG claims a 20–80 per cent charge takes approximately 42 minutes.

Vehicle-to-load functionality provides up to 6.6kW through the external CCS2 connection, allowing the ute to run tools, camping equipment or household appliances. Three additional cabin outlets can each supply up to 2.2kW.

A 236-litre storage compartment sits beneath the bonnet, offering secure space for charging cables and other equipment. The rear tub can accommodate a standard pallet, while a hands-free powered tailgate is standard.

The cabin takes a more passenger-car-like approach, with two 12.3-inch displays, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a 15W wireless phone charger and an eight-speaker JBL audio system.

Leather upholstery is also fitted. The driver’s seat gains heating, ventilation and a massage function, while the front passenger seat and steering wheel are heated.

Other equipment includes a 360-degree camera system and a full suite of active safety technology. MG says the electric ute carries a five-star ANCAP rating.
