Paul Walker’s BMW M1 sells for $1 million

Words: Harrison Wade

A highly-limited BMW M1 AHG Studie previously belonging to Fast and Furious film star Paul Walker has been auctioned off for approximately $NZ1 million in Miami, Florida.

Manufactured as part of BMW’s M division for a one-make series in support of Formula 1, the M1 has held an iconic reputation among racing and car enthusiasts alike since it was developed in the late 1970s.

This particular example is about as special as it comes though as it’s said to be one of ten dealership modified models among the already rare 400 roadgoing cars.

When the racing series ceased in 1982 after just two seasons, Peter Gartemann, president and owner of German BMW dealer AHG, decided to create a limited production version of the road car complete in tribute to the M1 Procar race car.

It features more aggressive front and rear spoilers, side skirts, and flared wheel arches that house three-piece 16-inch BBS wheels.

The changes didn’t stop with its looks though as each M1 AHG Studie was given a 260kW version of the M1’s 3.5-litre six-cylinder M88 engine alongside adjustable racing suspension, a racing clutch, and a new exhaust system.

Inside, leather seat inserts were fitted in place of the factory cloth units while its stereo system was also enhanced with more speakers. Topping it off is a unique to each car livery commissioned by AHG.

Walker and business partner Roger Rodas, who both sadly passed away in a car accident in 2013, were among the previous owners of this M1 AHG Studie with the car being sold in the year following.

When it went up for auction earlier this month, the car had just 6821km on its odometer and subsequently sold for $US648,500 ($NZ1 million), reflecting its exclusivity.
