Chery signals motorsport ambitions with Le Mans entry
Words: Andrew Sluys
Automotive powerhouse Chery has set itself a lofty target in the motorsport world, of becoming the first Chinese automaker to enter Le Mans.
Set to compete with its luxury sub-brand Exceed, an agreement has been signed with the Automobile Club de l’Ouest (ACO), who organise the 24 Hours of Le Mans and World Endurance Championship.

Though no date has been set for the brand’s entry, according to Chery, a “five-year strategic partnership” was entered with the ACO.
As a stepping stone towards its motorsport future, Exceed plans to establish an endurance racing series in its home city of Wuhu, with a Le Mans-certifified track.
Thus preparation is expected to “build technical capability and talent” as well as establishing a fanbase for the sport in China.
After these steps have been executed, the long-term plan is to have a factory-backed car entered into the hallowed Le Mans 24 Hour race.
Considering Exceed hasn’t expressed any interest in competing in the World Endurance Championship, a Garage 56 invitational entry is the most likely option.
These entries are for special, non-competing prototypes that give teams the opportunity to test their metal against the world’s best.
