MG4 Urban priced for New Zealand

MG has named its price for the new MG4 EV Urban, a compact hatch aimed squarely at budget-conscious buyers looking to ditch petrol.

Priced from $38,990 plus on-road costs, MG NZ says the MG4 EV Urban is positioned to compete directly with similarly priced internal combustion models, undercutting many EV rivals and lowering the barrier to entry for Kiwi drivers considering the switch.

While it wears the same name as the more angular MG4, it’s a different beast altogether, being a front driver with a torsion beam rear end. Apparently the MG4, described as the Urban’s big brother, will be back soon in facelifted form. 

According to MG New Zealand Country Business Manager Dean Sheed, the timing of the EV4 Urban’s arrival couldn’t be better.

“With the wildly fluctuating fuel prices New Zealand is experiencing at the moment, MG is thrilled to be expanding our EV range with this latest addition that offers exceptional value and practicality for drivers,” he said.

Built around a front-wheel drive layout, the MG4 EV Urban pairs a 120kW/250Nm electric motor with a 54kWh lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery. The result is a claimed WLTP driving range of up to 416km, along with energy consumption rated at 15.3kWh/100km.

Performance is modest but suitable for everyday driving, with a 0–100km/h time of 8.7 seconds and a top speed of 160km/h.

Charging capability includes up to 150kW DC fast charging, allowing a 10 to 80 percent top-up in around 30 minutes under ideal conditions, while a 6.6kW onboard charger handles home AC charging duties.

Despite its compact exterior dimensions, MG says the MG4 EV Urban has been designed with interior space in mind. A 2750mm wheelbase and efficient packaging deliver a roomy cabin for five adults, while boot space measures 382 litres with the rear seats in place, expanding to 1266 litres when folded.

Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, LED lighting, a 7.0-inch digital driver display, and a 12.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with satellite navigation and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. MG’s iSMART connected services and MG Pilot driver assistance suite are also included.

Safety is a key selling point, with the MG4 EV Urban carrying a five-star ANCAP rating and a full suite of advanced driver assistance systems.

The model also benefits from MG’s 10-year warranty, provided servicing is carried out within the brand’s dealer network, offering added peace of mind for long-term ownership.

Sheed also confirmed more models are on the way, including an updated version of the MG4 that previously took out top honours from the New Zealand Motoring Writers’ Guild.
