New Chevrolet Silverado HD unveiled with 8.3-litre V8
Words: Andrew Sluys
The 2027 Chevrolet Silverado HD has been unveiled, and among the changes includes an all-new Duramax engine.
Where the outgoing model used a relatively large 6.6-litre V8, this new model gets an 8.3-litre engine, which happens to be the biggest ever fitted to a production pick-up.

While this enormous displacement figure might sound ridiculous on paper, it’s all down to towing over in the US.
With such a large engine, this Duramax is able to make big amounts of power and torque, without being too stressed.
The official figures for this new engine are 413kW and 1,667Nm, which both well eclipse the 350kW/1,322Nm offered in the current model.
It has also been named the ‘Mongoose’, which is likely a joke on how it’s actually monstrous in size.

In the US, this new Silverado is capable of hauling over 17-tonnes in its range-topping 3500 HD trim level.
While this new engine is yet to be confirmed for the Silverado HD in New Zealand, it looks like this will be the only engine for this model in the US.
Given this knowledge, it is highly likely that if GMSV continues to offer the heavy Duty Silverado in our part of the world, the 8.3 will be heading our way.
If it does touch down, it will face competition from the RAM 2500 and 3500 HD models, which pump out 313kW and 1,458Nm from their turbocharged inline six engines.
