In a groundbreaking move to reward eco-conscious Kiwis, the NZ Transport Agency (NZTA) has just passed a new regulation allowing electric vehicles to use bus lanes across New Zealand effective immediately, officially.

That’s right: if you’re driving a fully electric car, you can now zip past traffic like a boss, sharing the lane with buses, taxis, and the occasional confused cyclist. Think of it as your reward for saving the planet (and dodging petrol stations).

How It Works:

  • ✅ Applies to fully electric vehicles only (sorry, hybrids, you’re not green enough yet)
  • ✅ You’ll need to display a “Zap Pass” sticker on your windscreen (applications open next week)
  • ✅ Available in major cities like Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch to start, with nationwide rollout by 2026.

Wait, What About the Buses?

NZTA says not to worry; studies show that most bus lanes in NZ are “under-utilised,” and letting EVs in will actually boost morale for commuters stuck in gridlock, watching Teslas zoom by.

“We’re creating a cleaner, faster, more futuristic New Zealand,” a totally real spokesperson said. “If you’re not driving an EV yet… well, you just got one more reason to switch.”

One Small Catch…

This new rule only applies to electric vehicles on April 1st.
